Wiring a Main Panel
Electrical Question: I bought a tiny one bedroom adorable house built in 1897, half the house is still knob and tube wiring. Someone apparently made an effort to update it with romex, but didnt get very far, the wiring up in the attic is knob & tube, but the wiring coming into the breaker box is new, which seems strange.

Someone apparently made an effort to update it with romex, but didnt get very far, the wiring up in the Attic is knob & tube, but the wiring coming into the breaker box is new, which seems strange. So. one fine day a storm came and power went out, when it came back on, it hicupped and stuttered a bit, but came on. It was about 10 minutes later that I went to the bathroom, and discovered that a breaker had obviously tripped, and wont turn back on, so I am working through that to find what got fried, and well I am at it I figured I would add a breaker for the furnace. It just seems to me that a furnace deserves its own circuit. : ) Anyway, digging around through the old school insulation and spider webs is kind of annoying so I figured why try to find and fix whatever happened to the knob and tube, Ill just replace it all. So that is what I am doing and of course theres a few issues . when they updated what little they did , I dont see any ground wires coming in to the box, and for that matter the box doesnt seem to have a ground bar. I have to say I am not sure how to recognize one, lol, theres a neutral bar on the left side , and on the right is in unused bar but I dont see a green screw so that is why I am not sure. I find it strange that all four breakers, (small house : ) , are on the right side with a wire connected to the pigtails going up and around to the left side neutral bar. Why not just put the breakers on that side, and connect the pigtails right there?
Anyhoo, all pigtails are covering this unused bar, would that be the ground Bar?
Theres no ground wires except for the one on the 220 line coming in for the dryer, and strangely, the ground wire is bent straight down after having just come in up from the bottom and doesnt connect anything. I have been using the dryer for 4 years now and every time I use it I think about that stupid unconnected ground wire, as well as the lack of any other ground wires. I cant dont see any metal conduit anywhere. So. my question is are,. 1, why no ground wires?
2, is the bar on the right side the ground bar with no green screw?
3, why not put the breakers on the left side for easily connecting the pigtails directly to the neutral bar?
4, what do I do with my ground wire for the furnace, and the future lines that replace these, connect them to the neutral bar?
. or to the unused bar on the right side, which btw, is bonded(?
) across to the neutral.

Wiring a Outlet
Electrical Question: Hello,
while my husband was drilling into the wall, he hit something that caused a loud pop, smoke and a spark. When we cut open the wall.
Wire Outlet
Maribel asks:
Hello,
While my husband was drilling into the wall, he hit something that caused a loud pop, smoke and a spark. When we cut open the wall. We realized he drilled through the sheath of the electrical wiring. It caused our appliances outlets to lose power. He flipped the breaker back on and everything appeared to be working. We inspected the electrical wiring and they appear to be okay. The only damage is to the part covering the wires. We are trying to determine whether it will be safe to wrap up and re seal the wall or if we would need to hire an electrician to cut the wires and create new connections. I hope that makes sense. Thank you.
