I have one outlet in my kitchen that quit working.
- I have replaced the outlet twice and each time I would test the circuit and the tester indicated everything was fine.
- When I plugged in an appliance it would quit working and the tester would indicate no power coming into the outlet.

How To Identify and Repair a Kitchen Outlet Circuit
Application: Repair a Kitchen Outlet.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools a Voltage Tester or Plug-In Circuit Analyzer.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools, the extent of the electrical repairs the number of outlets that are affected.
Precaution: Identify the kitchen outlet circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Troubleshooting a Kitchen Outlet Problem
- Replacing the Outlet
It has been noted that the kitchen outlet has been changed so we can rule out a bad outlet.
- Rarely does an outlet stop working, so the symptoms point to the possibility of a connection that may be failing.
- Voltage Test
If it is possible, a voltage test could be made to see if the hot side is working, this would be a voltage test from the hot side (the smaller straight blade on the right side of the outlet) to the ground prong.
- Problem with the Neutral
If there is normal voltage present but testing from to the neutral prong does not indicate a normal voltage reading then there is a problem with the neutral side of the circuit.
- Test the Circuit Outlets
Identify any other outlets that are affected as well. The circuit should be identified and turned OFF.
- Inspect the Outlet Wiring
Each other outlet or device of the circuit should be unmounted so that the wiring can be inspected where the connections are to the device and and splices within the device box.
- Making the Repairs
Once the problem has been identified then the necessary repairs should be made where a new device or outlet may be required and the removal of damaged portions of wiring.
- Repairing a Spliced Wire
Electrical repairs to a bad splice and installing a new wire connector may be be required as necessary.
- Bad GFCI Outlet
Other causes may be a bad GFCI outlet, or a loose or bad connection of the circuit wiring within the electrical panel.
