Light in Ceiling Fan
Electrical Question: Why did the light in my ceiling fan quit working completely?

The wall mounted switch indicated a problem when I turned it on and there was a 2 second delay before the light came on. By the next day the light quit working completely.

  • The light and fan are turned on and off from switches on the wall. Presently the light does not work but the fan does.
  • I used my meter to check that both switches are showing equal resistance.
  • My next plan is to check if the light fixture is working itself and or if there is power to the fixture. Can you explain how to do this properly?
  • I am not sure the path of electricity within this loop. Both switches do not have ground connections. I suspect that the switches are wired from the light to them. I have included a picture of the light on the ceiling fan exposed.

Troubleshooting a Ceiling Fan Light and Wall Switch

Light Switch
The wall switch should be tested and replaced if it is found defective.

Control Module
A delay before the light comes on may indicate there is a control device in the ceiling fan. If the ceiling fan has a control module then it should be tested and replaced as needed.

Light Bulbs
Make sure the recommended lights have been installed as stated in the owners manual of the ceiling fan. Many ceiling fans have over current protection which will prevent the lights from turning on if the bulbs are not the specified bulbs.
Light Delay Device
NOTE: There are devices that can be installed into the light socket that will delay the start of a standard light bulb, and if they are used they are commonly inserted into the base of each light socket.
