Wiring a GFCI Outlet
Electrical Question: I want to add a GFCI Outlet to a bathroom.
- I have everything down to the studs. The current set up is as follows:
- A double switch set up, on for the ceiling light one for the light above the mirror.
- Then it runs to an outlet.
- Then to the above mirror light.
- Where do I connect the new outlet?
- I assume the outlet box, but it looks a little crowded in there?
- I temporarily put up some dry wall but it is not screwed in, so picture seems inconsistent with my description.

Application: GFCI Wiring
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and the number of GFCI outlets that will be added.
Precaution: Identify the bathroom GFI outlet circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing additional GFCI Outlet Wiring should be done according to local and national electrical GFCI Codes with a permit and be inspected.
How to Wire a Bathroom GFCI Outlet Circuit
- James, the GFCI code requires that a bathroom outlets are required to be on a dedicated 120 volt 20 amp circuit.
- The receptacle outlet which is locatedĀ in the bathroom must be protected by a GFCI device which would either be a GFCI Circuit Breaker or a GFCI Outlet.
- If the existing wiring does not include a dedicated circuit then one should be installed.
- If the existing outlet box does have the dedicated circuit for the GFI outlet and it is crowded or the box is too small then the existing box should be replaced with a larger capacity box.
- The size of the box and the number of wire which fill the box is vitally important if a GFCI outlet will be installed because they take up a lot of space.
