Wiring Pendant Light Fixtures
Electrical Question: I am almost a complete beginner with home lighting projects so please answer in simple terms.
- I have three separate but identical pendulum lights that are designed to be hardwired.
- Instead of hard-wiring, I intend to connect them to each other and then connect to a cord with a plug, which is in turn connected to a wall switch.
- I know how to take the existing wires and splice it to a cord with a plug but the thing I cannot figure out is how to go from the first light to the second and then to the third.
- I can figure out how to connect the first white to the second white, as an example, but how do I get more of that white wire to go to the 3rd light?
- In other words, I think that once I connect the white from the first light with the second (twisting and then putting on the cap) what wire continues onto the next light?
I realize that I sound like an idiot. But the folks at the hardware store kept telling me it was so easy.

Thanks for your electrical wiring question Janet.
How to Make Light Fixture Wiring Connections
- OK- Rule #1 – Your Not An Idiot! Women are very intelligent and very intuitive, and we would be in Big Trouble without the help of women.
- Besides, anyone who lives in Bodega Bay has to be a great person.
- I love it there, boy do I miss the ocean – I can just smell the ocean!
- Besides, anyone who lives in Bodega Bay has to be a great person.
- What I’m interested to know, is what are you attaching the three pendant lights to? Is there any type of junction box?
- Aside from that – electricians face wires that are too short every once and a while, so what we do is just splice on a longer wire of the same color and type.
- This can be done using small wire nuts or wire connectors, or what is known as butt-splice crimp connectors which require a crimp tool that is used to squeeze the crimp tight onto the bare section of the wire. It really depends how much room you have to work with, that’s why I was asking what kind of junction or fixture box will be used.
- The electrical junction box provides a safe enclosure for the wire connections, and it also provides a way to anchor the fixture, which usually the fixture has a plate or canopy that covers the opening of the fixture box.
- Janet, if each pendant light will be some distance away from the others then a cord will have to be installed to looped from one fixture to the next. The cord will need to be long enough to allow for stripping the insulation off of the wire to make the connection to the pendant light wires.
- So Janet – if this does not seem to work with your light fixture project, then it would help me to know how far apart the pendant lights will be and what kind of fixture box will be used.
