Electrical Problem with a Wall Outlet
Mitchell asks:
- In my kitchen I have several standard outlets daisy chained off a GFCI.
- I plugged a vacuum in to one of the outlets and another outlet’s common wire started burning.
- We turned off the vacuum and let the smoke settle then we tried again and had the same result so we turned the breaker off.
- There was nothing plugged into the outlet that had the burning wire.
- It did not trip the GFCI.
- This is a track home that was built in 2009

Wall Outlet with Electrical Problem
Mitchell, from the information you have provided:
- A typical home vacuum cleaner can place a large electrical load on an outlet circuit, in some cases a vacuum may pull up to 12 amps, which is a pretty big load.
- The high amperage of the vacuum cleaner is being placed on all of the outlets between the one it is plugged into, all the way to the circuit breaker box.
- Given the age of the home and average usage, wiring connection may become loose to the point of over heating and creating a burnt connection, or portions of the wiring.
- The circuit wiring and the outlets should be inspected and repairs should be made, including replacing any burnt wiring, wire connectors, and wall outlets.
