Replacing a Ceiling Fan and Wiring the Switches
Background: Dana, a Homeowner from Lancaster, PA
[ad#block]Question: I am wiring a new ceiling fan/light at the same spot that I used to have only a ceiling fan. I connected white to white, black to black, blue from ceiling fan to red from the house, and green to green. I have a switch that used to control only the ceiling fan. I want the switch to now turn on the fan and the light, and then be able to control the fan or light with the pull strings. After making all these connections, the light turns on but the fan does not work. The pull chain to the fan does nothing whether or not the wall switch is on or off. I double checked my wire connections, and still no fan. Can you tell me what I’m doing wrong? Thank you!!

Skill Level:
Intermediate to Advanced - Electrical Repairs and Circuit Wiring is Best Performed by a Certified Electrician or Licensed Electrical Contractor.

Electrical Tools Required:
Basic Electricians Pouch of Hand Tools, a Voltage Tester and a Multi Meter.

Estimated Time:
Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools, work with electrical wiring, and the available access to the project area.

Precaution:
Identify the project circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.

Important:
Modifying existing electrical circuits or installing additional electrical wiring should be done according to local and National Electrical Codes, with a permit and be inspected.
