How to Splice Electrical Cables When Relocating an Electrical Panel
Electrical Question: I am upgrading an electric service panel.
We have a deer club in NJ used 30 days a year.
The old electrical service panel is in a bathroom, 3 feet from water, so it will not pass inspection.
I would like to gut the old panel and use it as junction box and install a new panel box in a safe location (upstairs, above the old panel box).
Question:
- I would like to install 2 terminal strip (Bus Bars) for a neutral and ground #6 wire in junction box.
- My feeds will come down from breakers and connected.
- I am trying to limit the amount of wires in EMT connection and junction box.
- Is this legal by code?

Moving a Electric Service Panel
- For this project each individual circuit will need to be spliced and extended using the same type and size of cable and then routed to the new panel location.
- A terminal strip or buss bars cannot be used to reduce the number of cables.
- The existing panel must remain grounded, and the ground extended to the new panel using approved lugs or termination methods.
- Electrical cable splices must be made in an accessible electrical enclosure and not buried inside of the wall.
- Electrical cables and electrical panel work is dangerous and it is highly recommended that you contact a local licensed electrical contractor to make sure this is done right and according to code.
