Electrical Repairs for an Old Fuse Panel
Electrical Question #1: Can a 30amp fuse box be replaced with a 100amp panel?.
- I am completely renovating my passed Grandfathers work shed, and its 40 yrs worth of mess. My question is if I wanted to replace the old 30amp box with obsolete fuses with a 100amp box, would it be OK?
- I only have 2 wires running into the panel. Do some have 3? Its been a very long time since High School Shop. Out of the loop is a bare severed copper wire. Does this need to go in to the panel?
- Nothing is grounded here and I just don’t want to kill someone.
Thank you for any advice.

Upgrading an Old Fuse Panel
Application: Upgrading a Fuse Box to a Circuit Breaker Panel
Skill Level: Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrician, Not Recommended for Homeowners.
Tools Required: Electricians Tools, pouch of hand tools and the various power tools necessary for the electric panel upgrade.
Estimated Time: Depends on the exact type of the existing panel or fuse box, the replacement panel to be installed, the original wiring methods that were used for installing the existing wiring, and available access to the project area.
Upgrading an Old Fuse Panel should be more than just replacing the electrical box, here’s what I suggest
- First of all, the rating of an electrical panel is the maximum amount of voltage and amperage for that panel. For example, many times a 60 amp rated panel is used for a 30 amp sub-panel.
- In this case where the home is old and the wiring and fuse panel are out dated it would be best to have a complete service upgrade. This would ensure that a new grounded electrical service is installed and inspected.
- Before upgrading the panel it wold be best to survey the entire home and consider installing new circuits, at least begin with GFCI and smoke detector circuits.
- The new panel should be sized for future circuits as well.
