Hiring an Electrician to Install a New Circuit
Electrical Question: How much would an electrician charge to install new circuit wiring?
My electrical wiring project involves Changing the Existing Wiring, and Adding a Circuit from my Panel to the Attic of a Old Home.
- My house is 20 yr old. There is a circuit on the 2nd floor of my home that goes out more often than not. I think it’s because it’s overload by additions to the circuit by the previous owner (ceilings fans, lights, etc.) The circuit is run through the attic.
- The main panel is in the basement, which is not finished. If I were to have a professional replace the wires of that circuit and add a new circuit to spread the load, how long should I expect this to take? I am asking because I want to know what I should expect to pay since most electricians charge by the hour. Thanks.
This electrical wiring question came from Mindy, a Homeowner in Maryland.

Adding a New Electrical Circuit
Application: Install New Circuit the Wiring from a Panel to the Attic.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical wiring project is best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor or Certified Electrician.
Electrical Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, Voltage Tester, and appropriate Safety Gear.
Estimated Time: Depends on the personal level experience, ability to work with tools, install electrical circuit wiring, and the available access to the project area.
Electrical Safety: Identify the electrical power source to the Panel, turn it OFF and Tag with a Note before working with the electrical wiring.
Electrical Wiring Parts and Materials: Electrical parts and materials for the Panel should be approved for the specific project and compliant with local and national electrical codes.
Electrical Codes and Inspections: Installing or changing home electrical wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes as adopted in Maryland. A permit and inspections may also be required.
The Basic Cost for Adding Electrical Wiring for a New Circuit
This electrical wiring project is about Adding New Electrical Wiring from a Panel to the Attic of a Old Home.
This example will demonstrate How an Electrician will Install Electrical Wiring for a New Dedicated Circuit to an Attic.
How Much an Electrician Charges
Typically, an electrician will charge for their Time and the Materials needed for the project. When adding and changing the existing wiring a permit may be required, therefore permit fees will apply. The hourly charge for an electrician will depend on the going rate in your area.
Get Multiple Bids or Quotations
It may be wise to consider getting at least three quotations from separate electrical contractors, and asking for credentials and customer referrals is very important.
How Long will it Take?
The estimated time it takes to do this project will depend on the available access to the project areas, such as attic and basement access and the available room to perform the work.
What the Electrician will do When Installing a New Dedicated Circuit
Determining the Circuit Size
The size of the electrical circuit the will depend on the existing overloaded condition. In this example, an additional 120volt circuit would be required. The wire type or electrical cable type is determined by the type of structure and if the wiring will be enclosed inside a wall, or if the wiring will be protected by electrical conduit.
Selecting the Electrical Cable Factors for determining cable type include where the cable will be routed or installed, such as through a basement, crawl space or attic, etc.
The Electrical Junction Boxes
The same is true for the junction boxes that will be selected for the circuit that will be installed. For example, will the junction box be surface mounted or flush mounted. The type of junction box is determined by the location of the installation, and the size of the circuit cable.
Splitting the existing circuit wires over to the new circuit will require circuit tracing and identification for the right connections to the new electrical junction box.
Connecting the Circuit Wiring
The circuit wires and ground wires are spliced together and bonded to the new junction box using the appropriately sized wire connectors. The newly installed circuit wiring components will be fastened and secured and protected as required.
Electrical Codes
Code compliance for electrical wiring installed to an attic is very important.
The electrical components of the circuit must be fully compatible and have the correct rated capacity.
