Home Theater Panel Wiring
Electrical Question: How should I wire a new panel for a home theater system?
- I have a remodeled house which had a 200 Amp Cutler-Hammer main panel installed 3 years ago.
- I am now installing a home theater system in the rec room.
- I wish to install a sub-panel by my audio video equipment and would need about 75 feet run of wire from the main to the sub-panel.
- The run is indoor across a garage and through soffits to the end location.
- I anticipate six 15 amp circuits. One for lighting, three for speaker amplifiers, one for an AVR receiver and one for the sub-woofers.
- While watching TV or movies, each circuit would have a maximum equipment load of 13 amps, with general operation much lower.
- I plan to install a 100 amp sub-panel and need to determine what size wire to run from the main panel connecting the sub-panel.
- Can you tell me what would be the appropriate size connecting wire?

Wire Size for a Home Theater Panel
Application: Home Theater Panel.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Electricians pouch of hand tools and the various power tools necessary for installing the sub-panel.
Estimated Time: Depends on the type and size of the panel and available access to the project area.
Precaution: Any existing electrical wiring within the immediate area that may interfere with the installation of the 100 amp rec room panel should be identified and turned OFF and Tagged if necessary.
Notice: Installing additional electrical wiring and a sub-panel should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
