Workshop Electrical Wiring
[ad#block] Electrical Question: I’m building an auto shop and have questions about electrical wiring.
I am in the process of building a 30 x 50 auto shop and have a couple questions:
- What are the pro’s and cons to running the electrical surface mount in conduit verses in the wall, other than cost? Walls will be finished with OSB plywood.
- How would can lighting compare to florescent lighting in energy efficiency and light output in a 10′ 4″ metal ceiling?
This electrical wiring question came from Damien, in Continental, Ohio.
Additional Comments: Very helpful website!
Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical wiring question Damien.
Wiring Shop Outlets and Lights
Application: Wiring for a Workshop.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical project is best performed by a licensed electrical contractor.
est performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, electric drill, auger bits and extension cord.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install electrical circuit wiring.
Notice: Installing additional outlet wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
Electrical Wiring Methods for a Shop and Light Fixtures
NOTE: Careful planing for electrical circuits is essential when building and wiring a new shop. The initial installation cost is much lower than having to add electrical circuits in the future.
- Wiring Methods for Shop Receptacle Outlets
- Where accepted, Type-NM electrical cable may be installed into framed walls where the cable will be covered and protected. This is a more cost effective method for general purpose outlet circuits.
- The disadvantage to Type-NM wiring compared to surface electrical conduit is the inability to pull in additional circuits if needed in the future compared to additional conduit wiring capacity.
- The reconciled wiring of Type-NM cable will provide a much cleaner appearance over surface mounted conduit.
- Comparing Shop Light Fixtures
- Can lights would produce a more downward directional type of light which may cast shadows compared to the more evenly distributed light that is produced by fluorescent lights.
- Fluorescent lights are typically more cost effective to operate compared to incandescent or halogen type lights.
- NOTE: Open type fluorescent light fixtures installed in workshop areas should include lamps that are protected by clear shatter proof plastic safety tubes.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation. The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.. The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use. |
