Installing a 30 Amp 220 Volt Dryer Circuit
Application: Installing a 220 Volt Dryer Circuit.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced, Best installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Work in electrical panels is not recommended for homeowners, non-experienced individuals or non-electricians.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, electric drill, auger bits and extension cord.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install 220 volt electrical circuit wiring.
Precaution: Identify the main circuit of the panel, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring or installing the 220 volt wiring and circuit breaker.
Notice: Installing a 220 volt dryer circuit should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
The Wire Size for an Electric Dryer Circuit

The wire size for a 30amp dryer circuit is #10AWG copper. - Electric Dryer Circuit Cable
The typical cable used for a dryer circuit is 10/3 Type NM cable which has three insulated wires and a bare ground wire, totaling four wires in all. - The Dryer Circuit
The typical 220 or 240volt electric heat dryer requires a dedicated circuit, which means that the circuit is not shared with any other device. - Ground Fault Protection
Ground Fault protection is required for all receptacle outlets that are installed in a laundry room. This includes 240 volt or 250 volt 30 amp electric clothes dryer receptacle outlets. NOTE: GFCI ground fault protection may be supplied by a GFCI circuit breaker. - Receptacle Outlet for a Dryer
The dryer circuit wiring connects to a NEMA 14-30 4-wire 250 volt receptacle outlet.
