Electrical Protection Against Lightning Strikes
Electrical Question: I have had two underground PVC conduit runs going 120′ from inside the house to a boat house on a salt water canal.
- Large pine trees 10′ from boathouse. Conduits are about 8″ underground and exit a sea wall 6″ above the water level and then travel under a dock. One supplies 110V to lights and PWC lift.
- Other conduit supplies 220V to boat lift motors. Wires over sized for loads. In 2 months time I have had 2 lightning strikes that have blown out 1 to 3 inch sections of the PVC conduit above the water level.
- One strike blew up GFCI for 220V lift and transformer in remote boat lift control and second strike blew out my conduit and neutral wire in the 110V circuit.
- Is there something I need to do like wrap the above water conduit in wire and take wire into the water or anything else I can do to prevent lightning damage. Should I turn off power in house when not in use?
- Still it blew my neutral 110V without tripping circuit breaker. Any tips to reduce odds for lightning strikes and damage.
