Wire for Electrical Circuits
Electrical Question: I have a Lithonia OALS12A 65F 120 P LP WH & BZ security light that asks for wire rated at 90 degrees.
- My wiring is silver covered with no writing.
- The wiring goes into a junction box also going to 4 outlets. Is it enough?
- I see by your pictures different colored wire.
- I’m told I have extension cord wire in my garage.
- How do I know if this is accurate and what can be on the circuit with what breaker size?
This home electrical repairs question came from: Kathryn, from Portland, Oregon.
Additional Comments: I liked your wire equipment breakdown and descriptions. What about old wire for those of us that have older houses?
Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical repairs question Kathryn.
How to Know if Your Electrical Wires and Cables are Correct
Application: Home Electrical Wiring
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best installed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install electrical circuit wiring.
Precaution: Identify the electric panel circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing additional electrical circuit wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
Identifying Wire for Electrical Circuits
- Homes are wired according to national electrical codes which have various electrical circuit requirements depending on the circuit application and area of the home.
- There are Specific Electrical Wires and Cables that are intended to be used for home electrical circuit wiring along with the circuit protection which is provided by circuit breakers and in some cases fuses.
- The electrical code is always the starting point which guides us through the wiring process. To see if existing electrical wiring is correct we go back to the code to see what should be installed.
- We then compare what the code states about the application, identify the existing electrical wiring, compare that to the code requirements and determine if the existing wiring is the correct type.

What is the electrical wire capacity
The amperage for electrical wire capacity wire is determined by a few factors. As shown in the NEC Table 310-16 below the temperature rating of the insulation has much to do with how much electrical current the wire is designed to withstand.
