Installing Dedicated Electrical Circuit Wiring for a Microwave Oven
Electrical Question: I am tripping circuits off in my kitchen, do I need another circuit?
When I run my appliances they work for about 1-2 minutes and then stop.
- I recently installed a new electrical outlet on a kitchen wall that previously had none.
- I basically ran the new wire down to our basement and tapped into an existing box that is running two additional outlets.
- I flipped the power on, plugged in the toaster oven and microwave and the clocks on both power up. However, when I run either of the two appliances, they tend to work for about 1-2 minutes and then stop. it doesn’t trip the breaker, but the outlet simply quits working.
- Without doing anything, the outlet will turn itself back on after about 10 minutes or so (I know this as the clocks on the appliances power back up).
- I tried replacing the outlet with a GFI outlet and the same thing occurs (only this time it does trip the GFI). Could it be the fact that I have plugged in two appliances that surge that’s causing this to happen? Why would they work for a bit and then stop but then work again?
I am very confused.

Application: Wiring a Microwave Oven Circuit in the Kitchen.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical project is best performed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, electric drill, auger bits and extension cord.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install electrical circuit wiring.
Notice: Installing additional outlet wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
Common Circuit Requirements for a Dedicated Circuit for a Microwave Oven
This electrical question describes the problems that may occur when a dedicated circuit has not been provided for a microwave over, which I will outline below.

A typical standalone microwave oven circuit is rated at 120volts 20 amps in areas of the U.S.A. - Dedicated Circuit Wiring
A dedicated circuit and is not shared with another device, especially a toaster which consumes a large amount of current by itself. - Installing the Microwave Oven Circuit
The circuit wiring is installed from an electrical panel which has the capacity for and additional 20 amp circuit. Circuit wiring is typically #12 AWG copper wire, which may also be 12-2 Type NM CU Cable or BX Cable as the location permits. - The Microwave Oven Outlet
A 20 amp rated receptacle outlet and cover plate is installed into a single gang junction box or outlet box which is located close to the location of the microwave oven.
