Wiring for a Ceiling Heater Fan
Electrical Project: I took out an exhaust fan from the ceiling and I am trying to install a 157 Broan NuTone ceiling heater fan.
Ceiling Heater Fan
John’s Home Wiring Project:
- I took out an exhaust fan from the ceiling.
- The ceiling wire has a black, white and ground wire.
- The wire is a 14 2 Romex wire.
- I am trying to install a 157 Broan NuTone ceiling heater fan.
- It has 2 wires a black and a red.
- I would like to know how to connect the wires from ceiling to heater fan.
- I tried black to black and red to white but it tripped the circuit breaker, to where it will not go back.
- The wires from the ceiling go to a switch that I think is connected to another switch next to it.
- That second switch goes to a different set of lights.
This request came from John in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your sharing your electrical wiring project John.

John, from the information you have provided:
- From what you have described, the Broan 157 should have a white, black, and ground wire – which would typically be attached to the wiring in the ceiling as with the original fan.
- Be advised that this heater will add an additional 1250watts load the existing circuit, which may cause an overloaded condition and trip the circuit breaker.
- With high load heater devices such as this it is best to install a dedicated circuit to avoid circuit overload.
