The Most Common Problems with GFCI Outlets and How to Fix Them
- GFI Outlet Problems
A GFI circuit problem can be caused by several things including the devices or appliances that are connected to the GFI circuit. - Check what is Plugged Into the Outlet
Start by checking the appliance that is connected when the GFI trips off because there may be a problem with the internal wiring for the appliance. - Isolating the Problem
If the GFI does not trip off when other things are connected then the GFI circuit wiring may be correct. - Check the Wiring of the GFI Outlet
- The Incoming circuit wiring is attached to the LINE side.
- The Outgoing circuit wiring is connected to the LOAD side.
- Segments of the GFI Circuit
Test each item separately in order to isolate the problem, then check the suspected device for wiring problems or abnormalities.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.

My GFI works fine except my intercom radio hums when on, but does not hum when I trip the GFI, the radio is on it’s own separate circuit, what is the problem?
Hi Bill,
The hum may be coming from something that is plugged into or connected to the Load side of the GFI circuit. If this is a stand alone GFI then the GFI may be older or need replacing.
I hope this helps,
Dave
