Adding a Ceiling Fan
Question: How can I wire a ceiling fan and wall switch?

I would like to install a ceiling fan in my bedroom. I have an existing switch that work a top part of a convenience outlet. The switch has a black, white and red wires. It is real easy to take new feed up to the ceiling fan location since I would only have to drill through two ceiling joists. How can I make this switch work for me. I have tried DIY and other videos, they are not a big help.
Part two is installing a remote. I do not have a clue concerning remote wiring but I have had success with most all my electrical problems.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Phil.

This electrical question came from: Phil, a Handyman from Upland, California.

Additional Comments: So far it is great. I hope there is a video. If not I read plans and specs as I was a field superintendent for twenty six years. I am a safety conscience worker.

Thanks for your electrical question Phil.

Adapting the Existing Wiring For a Ceiling Fan

Phil, there are several pages of wiring diagrams and resources available for you by just using the links below. You will have to determine the wiring for the existing light switch. Because you have mentioned that the switch has three wires then these wires will have to be identified to understand their function. If you have two three-way switches then a wiring modification will be required.
