Electrical Project: Can I convert the circuit wiring in my shop to be used for different equipment?
Jives in California is working on this electrical project:
- Due to an abundance of ignorance of the different amperage of 220v power I purchased a table saw with a 220v 15amp motor.
- My shop is wired with 220v by the guy who came before me. he put in two 30 amp breakers and one 60amp for some big 3 phase woodworking machines. However, the power going to the outlets is single phase.
- One of the 30amp breakers has two outlets with twist lock receptacles. is it possible to switch those outlets for two 15amp outlets or can I remove one of the 30amp breakers and put a 15amp in its place and 15amp outlets?
- I have worked with electricity and I am handy with tools and instructions but I have never worked in a breaker box. I am into DIY so I am game for new skills, but not so much at the cost of my life if at all possible.

Application: Convert Circuit Wiring for a Garage Panel.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – This electrical wiring project is best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Electrical Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, Voltage Tester, and appropriate Safety Gear.
Estimated Time: Depends on the personal level experience, ability to work with tools, install electrical circuit wiring, and the available access to the project area.
Electrical Safety: Identify the electrical power source to the area, turn it OFF and Tag with a Note before working with the electrical wiring.
Electrical Wiring Parts and Materials: Electrical parts and materials for the circuits should be approved for the specific project and compliant with local and national electrical codes.
Electrical Codes and Inspections: Installing or changing home electrical wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes as adopted in your specific area of California. A permit and inspections may also be required.

Converting the Circuit Wiring
- Jives, from the information you have provided, existing circuits may be converted as long as the wire type and size supports the amperage and voltage for the new circuit usage.
- If the wire size is larger that the proposed new circuit that is fine, however the wire size cannot be smaller that the new circuit power requirements.
- Also, the circuit breaker amperage must be the same as the outlet amperage, and all of the circuit wiring changes must have the required identifications, such as color coded electrical tape that is applied for the purpose of identifying the purpose of the each wire, at the circuit breaker panel, and at each outlet and device where any circuit changes have been made.
