[ad#block] Electrical Question: How should I provide GFCI Protection for a Welder Circuit?
- I am installing a 240 volt 50 amp circuit for a Chicago electric 225 amp arc welder. Can I have a GFCI at the panel breaker. The welder plug is three wire, 2 hot and a ground, no neutral wire All the GFCI’s I have seen involve a neutral wire, but there is no neutral wire on this welder. Thanks for any advice.

GFCI Protection for a Welder
Application: Electric Circuit for a 240 Volt Welder.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor or Certified Electrician.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and the available access to the welder circuit and electrical connection box.
Precaution: Identify the welder circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the 230 volt welder cord wiring.

- GFCI breakers are available for 220 volt circuits at various amperage ratings. As with any electrical circuit make sure the circuit has a ground wire, and that the equipment ground is properly bonded.
