Possible Problems When Converting Light Fixtures
[ad#block]I’m getting a dim light after changing a florescent ceiling can light into a regular light.
- There must be a ground short somewhere, but all looks good in wire box.
- There are switches on both walls that turn the light off or on. All the other lights work fine.

- Danny, there are two possible problems that would produce abnormal light output after converting a florescent light fixture to a normal lamp.

Wiring Mistakes When Converting Light Fixtures
- First – the transformer which supplied power to the florescent lamp must be removed because it is no longer needed.
- Typically each recessed florescent light fixture has a transformer that is built into the light fixture junction box.
- The next possibility is that the wiring has been connected in series instead of a parallel connection (color to color).
- A series connection will cause the circuit power to be directed through the light bulb where the light bulb will act as a resistor and restrict the amount of power which passes through the light bulb.

Converting Light Fixtures
- Please note that when a light fixture is converted to anything other than the original design that the UL Listing becomes invalid and will not apply. The UL listing is based upon tests performed where the light fixture is in the original unaltered condition. Converting light fixtures may be hazardous due to the use of a different type of light bulb that may produce excessive heat and become a fire hazard.

Safe Light Fixture Conversions
- There are some specific light conversion kits which may be installed according to directions and are available by the original light fixture company and are UL Approved.
- If a conversion kit or method is not UL Approved then I would not recommended doing it.
