I need a 110 volt outlet near the well house. - Converting 220 to 110
Can I get 110 volts off of the 220 volt circuit wires for theĀ well pump?
This electrical question came from: Randy, a Homeowner from Prosperity, South Carolina.
Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical repair question Randy.
Application: Installing a 120 volt or 220 volt circuit or modifying a well pump circuit..
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced, Best installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. Working in electrical panels is not recommended for homeowners, non-experienced individuals or non-electricians.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install 120 volt or 220 volt electrical circuit wiring.
Precaution: Identify the main circuit of the panel, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the pump circuit wiring or installing the 220 volt wiring and circuit breaker.
Notice: Installing an additional 220 volt pump circuit should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
Why You Should Consider a Sub-Panel for Your Well Pump Service
- 220v to 120v Converter
The only way to safely get 120 volts from a 220 volt circuit would be to use a transformer, however this would depend on what it is you wish to connect to the well circuit. - Well Pump Circuit
The 220 volt well circuit is a dedicated circuit for the well pump and it is best to leave this circuit alone to prevent problems with the well pump.
Electrical Tips for Wiring a Well Pump
- Installing Well Pump Circuit Wiring
If a circuit is being installed out to a remote well pump, especially if there will be a pump house, I would encourage you to install a sub-panel with a 4-wire service. - Pump House Sub Panel
The sub-panel service should be larger that theĀ required circuit for the well pump. This way the sub-panel may provide a circuit for the well, and have additional capacity for lighting and freeze protection or other accessories. - Planning for Future Equipment
Planning ahead for future electrical devices pays off in the long run, especially if the pump house is remotely located where a light and freeze tape will be required.
