Electrical Question: Can I install receptacles in a plug strip under the upper cabinets in a kitchen?
My electrical wiring project involves Installing Outlets in a Kitchen.
- I am installing receptacles for kitchen plugs. Is it legal to put receptacles in a strip like Wiremold under the bottom of the upper cabinets which also contain under cabinet lights? This seems like a cord dangling accident waiting to happen not to mention having to plug and unplug appliance after use? I took over part two of this project, it was installed in last 18 units. Doesn’t seem legal to me, but the NEC Code doesn’t specify on adjacent wall or above splash?

Installing Under Cabinet Kitchen Outlets
Application: Install New Wiring for Kitchen Outlets.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or Certified Electrician.
Electrical Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, Voltage Tester, and appropriate Safety Gear.
Estimated Time: Depends on the personal level experience, ability to work with tools, install electrical circuit wiring, and the available access to the project area.
Electrical Safety: Identify the electrical power source to the , turn it OFF and Tag with a Note before working with the electrical wiring.
Electrical Wiring Parts and Materials: Electrical parts and materials for the should be approved for the specific project and compliant with local and National Electrical Codes.
Electrical Codes and Inspections: Installing or changing home electrical wiring should be done according to local and National Electrical Codes as adopted in Poulsbo, Washington. A permit and inspections may also be required.

Hi Wade, Great Question,
Yes, I believe the plug strip is OK, as long as it is installed properly and GFCI protected.
In a similar project, we had solid granite counter tops that were full width to windows, and there was no wall space to install outlets. The client did not want counter top outlets installed.
So the only place left was to install plug strips inside the front portion of the drawers located just under the counter top. The inspector approved the idea. The plug strip cords were plugged into outlets mounted inside the base cabinets.
NOTE: The bottom line would be to run the idea past the inspector and make sure they are OK with it. This will cover your backside and give the customer what they want.
