Electrical Question from Larry about Wiring A Pond Pump

[ad#block]Question: Wiring a pond pump back to house to junction box on outside foundation through wall and wire into a line with a switch and continue out to rest of receptacles in this line. Diagram?

Thanks for your electrical question Larry. From the house junction box I would recommend installing a half or three quarter inch PVC conduit in a trench to the required depth of 18 inches which would end at the desired location at the pond. The larger three quarter inch size is not that much more expensive and will allow you to pull the wire through much more easily. An alternative is to install a Direct Burial Type UF Cable at a depth of 24 inches which would be protected with PVC at each end of the bottom of the trench, up to the junction box locations where the cable emerges. The junction boxes and associated materials must be rated NEMA 3-R for outdoor use. The circuit must be GFCI protected and weather proof covers which can accommodate the pump cord being plugged in and covered as well. The wire gauge must be sized the same as the wire at the house. This project should be installed with a permit and inspection. Please see the Electrical Codes link below for more information.
