Electrical Question from Linda about GFCI Wiring for a Dock
Background: Linda, a Homeowner from Brevard, NC
[ad#block]Question: I am replacing an outlet on my dock with a GFCI outlet (the old one was NOT a GFIC outlet). It is wired to be “hot” all the time (14 gauge solid wire – black is hot, white is neutral and there is a bare wire for the ground). I also would like to install a switch that would control 2 light fixtures on the dock using power from the outlet. Can you advise how the wire should be connected from the outlet to the switch and then from the switch to the fixtures?

Thanks for your electrical question Linda.
GFCI protection can be provided for the light fixtures by wiring the lighting to the Load side of the GFCI outlet. When providing power to a dock area it would be best to install the GFCI protection at the source of power before it gets to the dock location.
