Relocating an Electrical Panel
[ad#block] Electrical Question: I am putting in a new 200 amp breaker panel and moving the location.
- Wire from twelve of the existing circuits will be too short to reach the new panel.
- Is there such a thing as a terminal block that I can use to run the twelve wires to and then add new wire for each circuit from the terminal block to the new panel?
This electrical question came from: Monte, a Handyman from Sterling, Illinois.

Thanks for your electrical wiring question Monte.
Preparations for Moving Electrical Circuit Wiring
- Skill Level: Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor or Certified Electrician.
- Tools Required: Electricians pouch of hand tools and the various power tools necessary for the specific service upgrade.
- Estimated Time: Depends on the type of panel and available access to the project area.
- Precaution: This is an extensive project that should be performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
- Notice: Making changes to the Electrical Service Panel should be done with a permit and be inspected.
How to Move Electrical Circuit Wiring When Relocating an Electrical Panel
- Installing Junction Boxes and Gutters for Electrical Wire Splicing
- When circuit wiring is too short or the panel is being relocatedĀ consider installing a junction box at the old panel location and make all your splices with approved wire connectors or wire nuts.
- Then install a conduit between the new junction box and the new panel location and install the additional lengths of wire as needed.
- If this is an outdoor project then the junction box enclosure should be a NEMA3R type.
Home Electrical Junction Boxes
- Electrical Junction Boxes for Home Wiring
- How to select electrical junction boxes for wiring projects.
- Home electrical wiring is the process of installing electrical wire to a location that will serve electrical devices or an appliance.
- One very important component is the box where the wire will be installed.
- The type and size of the home wiring electrical boxes will depend upon the circuit size, application and its location.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation. The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.. The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use. |

Can Cutler Hammer BR ¾ inch circuit breakers be used as on/off devices on equipment like a 5hp, 220v air compressor, or should I install an on/off switch between the panel the compressor?
Hi Daniel,
It is always good to have a means of disconnect near the equipment. For small equipment this could be as simple as an outlet for the plug and cord. For larger equipment a switch or start / stop station or disconnect is typically installed.
