Yes Eileen, It sounds like the switch needs to be replaced. Garbage disposals draw a good amount of power which will heat up the internal contacts and over time this will cause them to break down and fail. When arcing is seen through the cover plate or the front portion of a switch it is a good indication that the switch may be starting to fail. When replacing the switch make sure it is rated for 20 amps and not a standard light switch.
My garbage disposal switch was not working and I tightened one of the screws. Now it works but sparks a little. Is that a problem?
