DEFY Hob Stove Hot Plate Problem
Electrical Question #1: Why are my Defy Stove hot plates not heating up all the way?
My stove hot plates are not heating up all the way.
- My defy electric 4-plate stove has only 2-small plates functioning despite having turned all switches on. What can be the problem?
- You need to turn all four switches in order for the two plates to on.
- I replaced all four of the stoves hot plates.
- Now the plates only get warm, not HOT.
- I have a DEFY Slimline 600 S.

Electrical Question #2: I have a defy 835 glass top stove, some time back one plate stopped working then they all followed suit as time went by.
I had an electrician look at it and when he bridged the plate it came back on which tells me there must be something electrically wrong with switches.

How to Troubleshoot a DEFY Hot Plate Problem
Application: Defy 220 Volt Hot Plate Wiring.
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. This electrical project is best performed by a Licensed Electrician or Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and the available access to the DEFY hot plate wiring.
Precaution: Identify the DEFY circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the hot plate wiring.
Note: Replacement hot plates or burners must be for the same make, model, voltage and watt rating.
Electric Circuit Power for Defy Hob Stove Plates
- When the Defy hot plates do not heat this indicates that one pole of the power is not functioning at the unit.
- During normal operation the appliance must be connected to the mains through a double pole isolating switch which has a minimum clearance between the contacts of 3 mm. in both poles.
- Make certain that both poles of the isolating switch are in the ON position.
- If your stove has a disconnect switch make sure that both poles of the switch are functioning properly and the defy is getting full power.
- If the circuit power has been tested and is found to be normal, then the control switch and the hot plates will need to be tested and replaced if found to be faulty.

The stove circuit should be checked for the specified electrical requirements as stated by the stove. If the stove circuit is found to be correct then you should contact the place of purchase to resolve the issues. If the electrical circuit does not meet the stove requirements then the required circuit should be installed.

My stove has one hot plate that takes forever to heat up like others and its not even a year old. I thought of going back to where I bought it to inquire about the problem, its either fixed or I get a new stove.

The electric circuit to the Defy should be tested, along with the wiring, and all the wire connections. From what you have said, it sounds like the Defy is not getting full circuit power.

I have Slimline Defy stove. When the switch in on the stove 2plate is on, but the other 2 is off and there is no heating on the 2 that is on, and the stove is only 2moths old.

The Defy 835 does not appear to have any fuses. The problem may be with the controls or an internal wiring problem. Testing the controls and visual inspection of the wiring may reveal the problem.

I have a Defy 835. Both front right and left jets have stopped working. I want to replace the fuses but I can’t find them. The oven manual doesn’t help.

I don’t think its the switch. I tried a new one and the old one…but I think I know what might be the problem. The defy red dot plates have a thermal limiter, when I inspected the broken one I thought maybe it is possible when reconnecting the wires that you can accidentally connect them in such a way that the wires short out and the thermal protection circuit kicks in and doesn’t heat all the way. Will check it out tonight.

I would suspect the control switch for the new hot plate is the problem. The control switch could be defective, or the wiring connections may be faulty. The wiring between the control switch and the hot plate should be checked as well.

I replaced my broken 2000w defy red dot hot plate. The ring around the old plate broke and then it went to full heat no matter what level you set it on.
After I replaced the plate with a new one it only heats up to warm and never goes to hot. All the other plates work perfectly fine. I also replaces the switch but nothing changes. Before I loosened anything I took pictures of all the wiring and marked them so the wiring is exactly as it should be. I have 220v supply.
What do you think can be the problem?

The hot plate that is not working may be faulty and need to be replaced. The hot plate can be tested and the wiring connections should be inspected to identify the source of the problem, and then the necessary repairs can be performed.

I have a two plate stove with an oven. One plate is not working while the other is, and the oven is working well. What is the problem?
If I switch any of the 220v plates on at the control switches the light lite up and go off again. When I test with my tester there is 206v at the tabletop supply, but as soon as I turn the knob past no 2-3 the supply is gone, and the there is 0volts. At the db every thing seems to be in order, no hot connections what so ever. Hope you can assist, Thanks.

Troubleshooting an Electric Stove Problem
Work the problem backwards. By his I mean start where the problem is, such as the stove hot plate that is not working normally. Check to make sure the voltage is correct, if so then test the hot plate for continuity, however if the voltage is normal to the hot plate then the hot plate is most likely faulty and needs to be replaced. If the voltage is not right then trace the wiring back to towards the control, make sure the wiring is OK and not burnt, then check the control switch and the wire and terminal connections at all points.
I see that you are from Pakistan, and methods of electrical troubleshooting are for the most part common globally now matter where we are. There are some variations in voltage, however the electrical principles are very much the same.

Replacing the hob plates heating element should be possible through Kelvinator or an authorized supplier, who will also be able to tell you if it is possible to upgrade the hob with the ceramic type plates.

I have a Kelvinator under counter oven and hob. Plates of hob not working properly and need to change, can I buy only the top and replace or do I need to to buy the whole system (Oven+hob)?
If I can just but top hob, can I go for different design (current one is metal hot plate) I want to shift to ceramic/glass one?

Hi Donna,
The thermal fuse for the Aroma AHP-313 Hot Plate is located near the side of the unit. Replace the thermal fuse with one of the same rating and size. Keep in mind that there should be 10 inches of clearance around all sides of the hot plate unit to prevent the thermal fuse from overheating. The thermal fuse is designed to prevent the hot plate from overheating which could cause permanent damage to the unit and its components as well as materials which are too close to the unit.

I had purchased an Aroma Double Burner Hot Plate – AHP 313 and now one of the burners is not working. In reading customer reviews of the product someone suggested that the thermal fuse might be broken. Can you please tell me how to replace such a fuse?

Here are the basics for replacing the heating element plate for a defy stove:
Identify the make and model for your stove and the heating element to make sure you get the exact replacement part.
Turn off the electrical circuit for the defy stove or unplug the main power cord before opening or gaining access.
Acess the burner element and notice the wiring connections and make notes to make sure the replacement is connected the same.
Remove the wires and carefully remove the existing defy top burner plate.
Put the replacement plate in position and attach the wiring to the burner plate the same as the original making sure the connections are firmly in place.
Complete installing the replacement burner plate as the original.
Carefully close up all access points to the top of the burner plate.
Restore the electrical circuit power and test the replacement part.

The big stove burner that you are referring to may have one or more problems as described below in order of probability:
The wiring leading to the large heating element is damaged and needs repairing.
The stove heating element is defective and needs to be replaced.
The heating control for the burner and or the electrical wiring connecting to the control is faulty.
The electrical circuit for the stove should be identified and turned off before any service work is performed.

I have a 4 burner stove. When I turn on one of the big burners the circuit breaker trips off, but the two small burner elements are working OK even when switched on together. Please help.

I would check to make sure that the new replacement hot plate elements were pressed into the socket all the way and that the wiring leading to the sockets did not get pushed back where they could not connect with the new hot plate elements.

I am experiencing this exact problem. The original plates worked 100%. I replace them because they started rusting and the wife complained about the effect on her pots.
Now the new plates only slightly heats up. Nothing near what is required ?

You may want to check the circuit breaker. If the unit requires 240 volt then the circuit breaker may only be providing 120 volts, this depends on your voltage in that part of the world. There may also be a problem with the main electrical panel. Was the original defy having the same problem? If so the problem is most likely somewhere in the circuit.
