Electrical Question from Mike about Electrical Wiring
[ad#block]Electrical Question: I have a 2 tanning bed panels with 8 lights each.
- I want to rewire from T12 to T8 or even T5 if possible. Is this easy done?
- The 2 panels run off one 230V appliance cord and are connected by another cord.
- Can I also split the panels and run them off 120w?
- The ballasts (4 on each panel) are:
- Siemens 5L Z 103 1-2Z
- 230V 60 Hz
- 1 x L 100W/180

How to Upgrade and Change the Lamps in a Tanning Bed
- To upgrade the type of lighting for these tanning beds would require fixtures that will be totally compatible for your tanning beds.
- You may find that the length of the newer fixtures may fit, however there is more to consider that would have to do with the type and amount of light that will be produced.
- You may want to compare the tanning beds that you have with the newer beds. How many lamps, the kelvin or type of light that is being produced. Also look at the controls and timers.
- The problem is that you will be altering the design of the tanning bed. Making this change will void the warranty and most importantly it will void the UL Listing of the device.
- If these tanning beds are used in a public tanning salon then I would warn against changing them, unless the original manufacturer has a specific upgrade kit available.
- Even if you use these beds for your personal use I would advise you to consult the technical department of the manufacturer and see what they say.
As for converting the wiring from 230 volts to 120 volts I would say no, because the design of the circuity and the components would be compromised. Unfortunately this is not as easy as converting a T12 Magnetic Ballast light fixture to a T8 Electronic Ballast setup.
