Disconnecting Hot Tub Wiring
Electrical Question: We removed our hot tub, what should I do with the electrical wiring?
- We just got rid of a hot tub and now I am left with the 220 line going to our pool deck.
- Before we tore down the hot tub, I turned off the circuit breaker at the panel they installed on the outside of the house. It provided 220 for the hot tube and runs independently from the main panel.
- What is the proper way to make this safe? I capped the ends of the line where it connected to the hot tub and left the circuit off, then I put a lock on the panel box. Is this safe enough or should I pull the breaker out completely?
- I realize the bar is still hot but other than messing around with the main supply from the pole I’m not sure what else to do.

Disconnecting Hot Tub Circuit Wires
Application: Disconnect the Electrical Wiring to a Hot Tub.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical project is best performed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools.
Precaution: Identify the circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing additional electrical wiring should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.
The following is the basic process of how an electrician removes Hot Tub Circuit Wiring. If the hot tub circuit will no longer be used for any purpose then the wiring to the circuit breaker should be disconnected or completely removed by a qualified electrician.
- Removing Hot Tub Circuit Wiring
- Unused electrical wiring, especially in an outdoor location in a pool area should be completely removed to eliminate any possibility of accidental energizing which could lead to several hazardous conditions.
- At the electrical panel the hot tub circuit is located and turned off.
- The electrical wiring that was installed from the hot tub disconnect panel box to the hot tub enclosure should be pulled out and removed.
- The circuit breaker feeding the hot tub panel should be clearly identified as Unused, and turned off and marked as a Spare breaker.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation. The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.. The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. Hi Karen,

Disconnect spa panel box from main circuit:
We want to properly disconnect a currently unused spa panel box from the main circuit. What is the proper way to do this? Is it ok leave the main 220 breaker in place and just “unscrew and terminate” the wires that lead to the spa box. If so, what is the proper way to do this? If the 220 breaker in the main box has to be totally removed, how is this done?
We live in Arizona, and are considering selling soon. We want to leave the option open for a new spa, and think there is no need to remove the underground wiring and spa box, because it goes to a dry deck with a redwood gazebo.
Hi Marlene,
If there is a possibility the new owner may want a hot tub installed but the circuit is not being used right now then make sure the circuit breaker for the hot tub at the main panel is turned OFF and labeled as SPARE. Any unconnected wiring that used to go to the original hot tub should be removed up to the point where the disconnect near the hot tub is located and the disconnect or breaker in this location should be in the OFF position. If the new owner has no intention to install a hot tub then the circuit wiring at the main panel should be disconnected from the breaker and capped off, and then all of the circuit wiring assembly should be removed from the main panel to the hot tub location. This should all be done by a qualified electrician.
