Electrical Tips to Help You Wire it Right

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires!

The Non-Contact Electrical Tester
This is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.

The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring!

The Plug-In Outlet Tester
This is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring.
It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.

Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire!

The Wire Stripper and Wire Cutter
My absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires.
This handy tool has multiple uses:
The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation.
The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets..

The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use.

They hooked the hot tub wires to my main electric box. I need to know how to remove them. Thanks.

    Hi Karen,
Please see the updated post above for more information about Disconnecting Hot Tub Circuit Wires.

  3. Marlene says:

Disconnect spa panel box from main circuit:

We want to properly disconnect a currently unused spa panel box from the main circuit. What is the proper way to do this? Is it ok leave the main 220 breaker in place and just “unscrew and terminate” the wires that lead to the spa box. If so, what is the proper way to do this? If the 220 breaker in the main box has to be totally removed, how is this done?

We live in Arizona, and are considering selling soon. We want to leave the option open for a new spa, and think there is no need to remove the underground wiring and spa box, because it goes to a dry deck with a redwood gazebo.

  4. Dave Rongey says:

    Hi Marlene,
If there is a possibility the new owner may want a hot tub installed but the circuit is not being used right now then make sure the circuit breaker for the hot tub at the main panel is turned OFF and labeled as SPARE. Any unconnected wiring that used to go to the original hot tub should be removed up to the point where the disconnect near the hot tub is located and the disconnect or breaker in this location should be in the OFF position. If the new owner has no intention to install a hot tub then the circuit wiring at the main panel should be disconnected from the breaker and capped off, and then all of the circuit wiring assembly should be removed from the main panel to the hot tub location. This should all be done by a qualified electrician.
