Wiring for Garage Lights and a Switch
[ad#block]Electrical Question: In my garage there is 1 light and I want to add 3 more. The current light is controlled by a pull chain and not a switch so I want to add a switch as well. The existing wire has “E18679 AWG 12 CU 2 CDR with AWG 12 ground type NM-B 600 volt” on it.
My plan is to buy the exact same wire to run to the other lights. Because it is AWG 12 does that mean it carries 20 amps?
If so then I assume I must only use a switch that says 20 amps and not one that has 15 amps?
The current light is 60 watts and the new 3 would be as well for a total of 240 watts, is that ok?

- Carl, yes the 12 gauge wire is good for 20 amps and matching the existing wire size is the right thing to do.
- Typically the addition of 3 more lights should not be an amount of load that wold be a problem, however testing the circuit would reveal this to be sure.
