Electrical Question: Can we run power from the electric utility pole to a large pump house main panel and then to a panel at the main house?
My electrical wiring project involves installing a Main Panel for a New Home.
- New home build coming up with a future shop in the plans. The well and shop will be fairly close, within 100 feet, to the pole and the house about 200 feet away from those. My question is can we run power from pole to a large pump house, with slab, and locate the main panel with meter on that building? We would run sub panels in the house and garage.

Application: Installing an Electrical Service to a Home.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, or Certified Electrician.
Electrical Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, Voltage Tester, and appropriate Safety Gear.

This electrical wiring project is about locating the main electric panel at a pump house which then supplies power to a workshop, the home, and a garage.
Main Electric Panel at a Pump House with a Sub Panel at the Home
For dwellings such as this you do have the option to have the meter main panel at the pump house, and then feed off of that to the home and shop panels. It’s a great idea and works out very well. Just be sure to size your panel feeder cables accordingly for the amperage and the distance, and factor in any large equipment such as air conditioners etc., as you do not want to have the voltage drop when a large load starts up. Pump House Electric Wiring
Also be sure to have provision in the pump house for the pump, a light, and outlet for service work and if needed for heat cable if this is a cold area. You would be surprised how many folks do not plan for these things and regret it later.
