Wiring Connections for Ceiling Fan and Recessed Lighting
[ad#block] I have a 2 wire coming into switch box from power supply.
- I then have 3 wire from switch box to ceiling fan, no light fixture on fan.
- Then I have 2 wire from ceiling fan to 6 recessed cans that I want to switch from origination point being the switch box and operate fan with pull chain only.
- I Think I know how but could you verify for me?
Thanks, Frank

Frank, the power source should connect to one of the three wires leading up to the ceiling fan which the ceiling fan should connect with. The switched wire should splice through the ceiling fan junction box where it will then feed the six recessed light fixtures. The neutral wire is shared.

Hi Frank,
If you would like the ceiling fan to be controlled separately from the recessed lights then new wiring would need to be installed, otherwise a ceiling fan installed in place of an existing light would be controlled with the other lights. Please note that the addition of a ceiling fan requires a UL Approved electrical box that meets the NEC Code for the specific ceiling fan that is installed.
I hope this helps you,
Dave
Hi, my question revolves around adding a ceiling fan to an existing recessed lighting group in our living room. We have nine can lights set up on one switch and wanted to add a ceiling fan in place of the middle light. I was wondering if there was a way to add a ceiling fan without having to rewire a separate circuit. Thanks!
