Long Distance Electrical Services Require Considerations
Question: I Purchased property with existing 200 amp meter main underground fed pedestal. Pedestal is approximately 150 ft from pole mounted transformer (which has been removed from pole who knows when because the pedestal was never energized). There are no buildings on the property.
My question is: Where I want to located my house will be another 275 feet from the pedestal and the house will be approximately 2000 sq feet, all electric with 200 amp panel. What size wire should I run from pedestal to house given that distance?
The ground is extremely rocky and I don’t know yet if I will need to run conduit for protection of wire. (I have a call into the local inspector). I will be running aluminum wire. Also, do I need to run a ground wire along with the feeder wires, or can I drive ground rods at the house?

Thanks for your electrical question Dave. Dave, based on my experiences with projects just like this, my suggestion is to have the primary (high voltage) electrical service brought as close to the home as possible. This will avoid having to deal with voltage drop and tens of thousands of dollars to install an over sized underground secondary service to the home.
