Electrical Apprenticeship Programs
Electrical Question: What is the best way to enter the Electrical field in an apprentice school, with paid training?

Dave’s Reply:
There are many opportunities to enter Electrical Apprenticeship Training Programs which are available through the Federal Government, State Government, and Local Community Education Programs. I personally grew up in an electrician’s family where my Dad taught me the electrical trade and helped get me started, however during my career I expanded my electrical education in several areas to enable me to become qualified for other positions within the electrical industry. Below are several examples of how to gain experience and education as an electrician and participate in an electrical apprenticeship program.

How to Become an Electrical Apprentice

Federal Government Apprenticeship Programs
The United States Department of Labor is a great place to find information about apprenticeship programs that are available, and grants that may be available.

State and Local Government Apprenticeship Programs
Each state has various apprenticeship programs that are available for electrician training for the electrical trade.

Here is an example of the The California Apprenticeship Program

Here is an example of the The New York Apprenticeship Program

Occupational Programs for Students

Local colleges offer training programs for careers within the construction industry working through Local Occupational Centers where students receive Hands On Training, which is a great place to gain experience and basic education before entering a formal apprenticeship program.

Here is an example of the List of Approved Schools for the California Department of Industrial Relations

Educational Programs for Youth

Local communities offer educational programs through clubs and organizations that provide youth and students the opportunity to begin developing their understanding and education in many areas of life they may choose to become involved in.

Here is an example of the The Future Farmers of America Agricultural Technology & Mechanical Systems Program

Here is an example of the The Programs Available through Local 4-H Clubs

Note: Local programs provide great educational opportunities, community involvement, as well as competitive events and achievement rewards that can be beneficial for a future career.

The Rewards of Electrical Training

The benefits of an electrical apprenticeship training program are great and the training is superior. I have personally received training through such programs and I am very satisfied with the electrical industry as a career.

The Electrical Industry is a wonderful occupation everybody needs electricity on a daily basis. I’ve met so many other people in the trades who wished they had become an electrician. When other trades are out of work, we keep busy – and with the advancing technologies and energy efficiency I think the future will be awesome!
Find your place in the electrical construction and maintenance industry and go for it, I think you’ll find it very rewarding!

Electrical Tips to Help You Wire it Right

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires!

The Non-Contact Electrical Tester
This is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.

The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring!

The Plug-In Outlet Tester
This is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring.
It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.

Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire!

The Wire Stripper and Wire Cutter
My absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires.
This handy tool has multiple uses:
The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation.
The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets..

The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use.
