Taking Domestic Electrical Equipment to a Foreign Country: The safest way to know if your electrical appliance will be safe to connect and use with a foreign electrical system. |
Checking Foreign Voltage for Compatibility
[ad#block]Electrical Wiring Question: I moved to another country so will I be able to make a workable connection with the power sources, and If not will I be able to connect using a converter power source?
- When I moved to another country I brought my electric range with me. It is a GE range Model: JBS55DMWW SKU: 8464244.
- In this country the standard electrical outlet is 220 and is two small gauge wires.
- They also have a three wire plug used specifically for the air conditioner wall units.
- Will I be able to make a workable connection with either of these power sources? If not will I be able to connect via a converter power source?

Foreign Voltages and Electrical Systems
- Take it From a Local Electrician The safest way to know if your electrical appliance will be safe to connect and use with a foreign electrical system is to have a local electrician compare your appliance with the local electrical system.
- If the electric range is strictly heating elements with not electronic components then it might be safe with the existing 220 volt system, but again – check with a local electrician.
- The 220 volt system should be much the same as here in the USA, two hots and one earth ground, however the amperage is a big factor as well.
- Taking Domestic Electrical Equipment to a Foreign Country When people ask me if they should take their electrical appliances with them when they relocate to another country I usually advise them to leave their domestic appliances at home and purchase new appliances where they are moving to that way there will be complete compatibility and not worries of burning up an appliance that could become totally useless.
- Foreign Voltage Adapters and Converters There are a number of voltage adapters and converters available but be very careful to make sure that the adapter or converter will produce the output that will be rated for your specific equipment.
- Electricity around the world needs to be properly identified to prevent possible harm to your personal electrical devices.
- An electrical device from America is manufactured for an electrical service of 110 to 120 volts and 60 Hertz.
- When using Non-Power Correcting Adapters some of these domestic devices could over heat and burn out after a while.
- This could happen right away or could take a day, possibly weeks, months or even years. It really depends on the quality of the device.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation.
