Floor Outlets are Different by Design

Application: Wiring a 120 Volt Floor Outlet.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced – Best installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester. Additional power tools may be required depending on the type of flooring and the floor covering.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools, the number of floor outlets that will be installed, and the access to the location for the new floor outlets and wiring.
Precaution: Identify the existing power circuit, turn it OFF andĀ  Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing electrical wiring for floor outlets should be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.

  1. Diane Smith says:

Which model/make floor outlet is pictured above? I’m trying to find one that doesn’t have a stick up hinged cover. I’d rather remove the cover and replace it when the lamp isn’t plugged in.

    Thank you!

  2. Dave Rongey says:

    Hi Diane,
The brand of the floor box shown in this article is Hubbell, who also has the Raco trade name. A similar version of this floor box with two outlet openings was purchased from Home Depot.
I hope this helps you with your floor outlet project,
