In an accessible attic space I would like to do some rewiring and replace the old 2 wire ungrounded circuit wiring with new Romex 2 wires with a ground. I will be replacing several junction boxes as well with this rewiring project. Do the new junction boxes need to be above the insulation instead of secured to the ceiling joists like the are now? So they are not covered by insulation.

How to Install Electrical Wiring and Junction Boxes
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced, Best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Electrical Tools Required: Electricians Pouch of Hand Tools for Rough-In Wiring, Electric Drill and Auger Bits, Extension Cords, and Ladders.
Construction Safety: All personal safety measures must be taken when performing remodel projects where you may come into contact with hazardous materials and environmental contaminants such as fiberglass insulation, vermiculite and asbestos, molds or mildew, as well as dust.
Estimated Time: Depends on the extent of the project, the type of wall coverings and structural construction and available access to the project area.
Precaution: Any existing wiring in the immediate area that may interfere with the installation should be identified and turned OFF and Tagged.
Notice: Installing additional electrical wiring or upgrading existing electrical circuits and wiring should always be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and be inspected.

- It is best to have the junction boxes located where they are visible and not covered with insulation.
- The junction boxes should have a blank cover placed of them to enclose the electrical wire splices and protect the wiring.
- Junction boxes should be selected by the amount of space or cubic inches that is required for the size and number of electrical wires that will be installed into the junction box.
- Junction boxes must always be accessible according to the electrical codes.
- Burying a junction box behind and wall covering, tile or cabinet is not acceptable by electrical code.
- A junction box may be covered by insulation if it has a blank cover on it.
- If the junction box will have a switch or an outlet installed then it must be accessible and not buried.
