Causes of Lost Power to Garage Outlets
Electrical Repair Question: The electrical outlets and light switches in my house stop working in certain zones then mysteriously start working again. The outlet for the garage door opener stopped working on one side, so the plug was switched to the other side which worked. When the other side was later checked with a tester, it worked.
Currently, the outlets and lights in the dining room are not working but all other outlets and lights in the remaining parts of the house work. The circuit breakers have been checked, and none have tripped.
What could be causing this interruption in service, and is it a potential hazard? What would an electrician need to look for to resolve the issue?

Checking the Electrical Circuit for Garage Outlets
Gary, an electrician would identify the garage outlet circuit and the other affected outlet circuits and examine the circuit breaker, the connection to the panel main buss. Because the lost power has affected other areas of the home electrical system an inspection of the main electrical conductors and their connections will be required. In situations such as this there may be a deteriorating condition at one of these connections. This requires a qualified electrical contractor who will know what to look for and how to fix the problem. It is not recommended that the homeowner, handy man or unqualified person perform these checks and inspections.
