Considerations for Locating Recessed Pot Lights
Electrical Question: My contractor is moving some pot lights in my living room because we’ve had a bookcase built along one whole wall which is 14 ft. long.

This electrical wiring question came from: Michael, a Homeowner from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dave’s Reply:
Thanks for your electrical wiring question Michael.

Guidelines for Installing Recessed Can and Pot Lights

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical wiring project is best performed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools, a non-aluminum ladder and Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and access to the light fixture(s).
Precaution: Identify the light circuit, turn it OFF and  Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Installing additional fixture wiring should be done with a permit and be inspected.
Locating and Positioning Recessed Pot Lights will depend on a few factors as described here:

  1. Size and type of light fixture.
  2. The light bulb type and watts or illumination light output.
  3. Height and depth of the bookcase with respect to the ceiling.
  4. Type of light trim that will be installed on the recessed pot light fixtures.
  5. Trim types are many including straight down and directional eyeball types.
  6. Safe distance proximity away from flammable materials.
  7. What is your desired effect, and will a dimmer be used to control, the level of light.
  8. Will this lighting be used to dominate or showcase an area of the room, blend in, or would you like a subtle accent appearance.
  9. And last but not least, locate and identify any ceiling joists and other obstacles above the ceiling that may interfere with the actual installation of the proposed light fixture housing, and pay attention top the type of insulation codes that may apply to your area.

So to sum it up, you should begin with the end in mind, That is what “look and feel” would you like? Once this decision is made then you can take these other factors into consideration.
Finally you will be able to go shopping to select the right light fixtures, lamps and trims.

Alternative and Complimentary Types of Light Fixtures To Consider

Electrical Tips to Help You Wire it Right

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires!

The Non-Contact Electrical Tester
This is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.

The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring!

The Plug-In Outlet Tester
This is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring.
It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.

Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire!

The Wire Stripper and Wire Cutter
My absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires.
This handy tool has multiple uses:
The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation.
The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets..

The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use.
