Lights Dim When Dryer Starts

Electrical Panels and Electric Dryer Circuits – The problem I am having is, no matter what the load is in my house my lights dim… |
Possible Causes of Dim Lights
[ad#block] Home Electrical: I live in a two year old two story single home dwelling.
- The power source is standard 240 with a 200 amp 40 space 40 circuit breaker panel.
- I have five 220 dedicated breakers.
- The problem I am having is, no matter what the load is in my house, my lights, mainly the recessed lights dim badly when the dryer or any other 240 appliances are turned on.
- It seems like it is getting slowly worse.
Any ideas?

Thanks for your electrical question Robert.
Electrical Panels and Electric Dryer Circuits
- Robert, all of the electrical wiring connections should be checked at the electrical panel, especially the lighting circuit.
- This may be an indication of a loose electrical connection or a deteriorating connection with one of the main incoming lines at the panel as well.
- This should be checked by an experienced electrical contractor.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. I replaced a dryer line and plug. When the dryer was turned on the lights on first floor dimmed down to 20 percent.
Hi David,
From what you have described it would be best to turn off the dryer circuit. The circuit wiring methods and the connections to all of the components should be carefully examined to determine any possible fault.
Please note that electrical wiring should be installed with a permit and then inspected by authorities representing the local jurisdiction.
I hope this helps,
Dave
