Installing a Garbage Disposal and Dishwasher Outlet

• Ernie, the outlet for the garbage disposal and dishwasher is generally located in the base cabinet under the kitchen sink. A wall switch located at the counter top level near the kitchen sink controls the garbage disposal and the dishwasher is plugged into one of the outlets of a duplex outlet.
• Because the duplex outlet is not accessible from the counter top the duplex outlet is not required to be protected by GFCI. In the future it may be required that garbage disposal and dishwasher outlets be protected by GFCI.
• The dishwasher and garbage disposal is typically fed by a dedicated 20 amp circuit that is shared by both using a specific wiring method described by the wiring diagrams that can be accessed from the links found below.
