Electrical Question about installing a new programmable timer for a lighting system
Background:Â an Electrician from Rockford Illinois
Question: Trying to add a programmable timer to an existing lighting system. Upgraded to HWCFL, went from 24,115 watts to 5,300 watts. Shut power off at breakers, probed and power is still present. The contactors are in use with the existing system. Any ideas, do I shut off at the main relay panel?

Thanks for your electrical question. There is a lot of unknown information here, but if the new timer is to take the place of the existing system then you either need to identify that system and separate out the area you want to have controlled by your new timer or just remove the control wiring to the existing lighting contactor and replace it with your control wiring. You will need to check the control voltage and the existing relay voltage and coil load etc. to make sure you stay within the limits of the new timer control circuit. If you find that you are outside of the limitations of the timer control circuit then install an additional control circuit and use relays to accomplish the control process. The drop in wattage for the HWCFL is very nice. The client will have a nice energy savings.
