[ad#block] Electrical Question: I want to add a panel for a hot tub, some outlets and lights. Should I run a 100A service panel so I can supply power for all these circuits?
- I have a two story home that has an unfinished basement.
- There is a 200A service in the basement. I also have a semi-detached garage with a 60A panel (no main breaker).
- There is an open porch on the rear of the house that is covered by an existing roof which was part of the original construction.
- I am enclosing this porch and want to wire it with outlets.
- I want to add a hot tub (50A) outside this porch & there is an existing pool pump outside.
- Should I run a 100A service panel on the porch so I can supply the outlets, lights, etc and the hot tub?
- The hot tub will have a disconnect on the outside wall of the porch.
- My 200A panel only has two slots left which is why I want the 100A panel and it makes sense to put the 100A panel on the porch only because of the hot tub and pool.
- Do I need a permit if I do it myself. I don’t mind the fee but the inspectors in our county are kinda tough when they see its a home owner doing the work. Thanks

Application: Adding a Sub Panel for a Hot Tub.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced. This electrical project is best performed by a Licensed Electrician.
Tools Required: Electricians pouch of hand tools and the various power tools necessary for installing the sub-panel.
Estimated Time: Depends on the type and size of the panel and available access to the project area.
Precaution: Any existing electrical wiring within the immediate area that may interfere with the installation of the sub panel should be identified and turned OFF and Tagged if necessary. Working in an electric panel is dangerous due to arc flash hazards and the possibility of electric shock.
Notice: Installing electrical wiring for either a hot tub or a sub-panel must be done according to local and national electrical codes with a permit and the work will require inspections.

Careful consideration should be given about installing a panel on a porch as there may be clearance and access limitations that may affect working clearance. Installing conduits for electrical wiring of any circuits, as well as the feeder circuit to the proposed panel may be an issue. A panel which supplies power to circuits for an unfinished basement may be best installed inside the basement area in an approved location. - Project Recommendations
