Humidity Can Affect Electrical Devices and Wiring Splices
[ad#block]Question: How do I solve a humidity problem that effects some of the electrical devices?
- Whenever summer arrives, I encounter problems with both the kitchen light and my dishwasher. Both seem to react to increased humidity in the home and behave as if no power is reaching them.
- If I turn on the wall switch for the ceiling fixture, there is no response. Sometimes, I have left the switch in the on position, and at a later time, the light may come on, sometimes in as little as 5 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes later.Unfortunately, the dishwasher is a little more stubborn.
- I have been attempting to run the dishwasher for the past 4 days and it might as well be unplugged. (It has been raining outside for the past 4 days as well !)
- As a last ditch effort, I turned the A/C to dehumidifier and ran it for a couple hours, guess what? My dishwasher now responds to commands and is operating as normal.
- How do I solve this dilemma?
P.S. The dishwasher and the light are on the same circuit.

Thanks for your electrical question Maryann
Humidity and Electrical Wiring Splices and Switches
- Maryann, humidity can have an affect on electrical wiring splices and cause corrosion of aluminum and copper electrical wire. I have seen this firsthand inside of electrical junction boxes found in kitchens that have high levels of humidity.
- This corrosion can definitely lead to a bad connection or wire splice and create a bad connection between the contacts of switches.
- When this condition is found it would be best turn off the circuit power, clean off the corrosion, and recreate the splice using corrosion inhibiting wire connectors and to install a gasket between the cover plate and the wall.

The Safest Way to Test Electrical Devices and Identify Electric Wires! The Non-Contact Electrical TesterThis is a testing tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and is the first test tool I grab to help identify electrical wiring. It is a Non-contact tester that I use to easily Detect Voltage in Cables, Cords, Circuit Breakers, Lighting Fixtures, Switches, Outlets and Wires. Simply insert the end of the tester into an outlet, lamp socket, or hold the end of the tester against the wire you wish to test. Very handy and easy to use.
The Quickest Way to Check for Faulty Electrical Wiring! The Plug-In Outlet TesterThis is the first tool I grab to troubleshoot a problem with outlet circuit wiring. This popular tester is also used by most inspectors to test for power and check the polarity of circuit wiring. It detects probable improper wiring conditions in standard 110-125 VAC outlets Provides 6 probable wiring conditions that are quick and easy to read for ultimate efficiency Lights indicate if wiring is correct and indicator light chart is included Tests standard 3-wire outlets UL Listed Light indicates if wiring is incorrect Very handy and easy to use.
Strip Off Wire Insulation without Nicking and Damaging the Electric Wire! The Wire Stripper and Wire CutterMy absolute favorite wire stripping tool that I have had in my personal electrical tool pouch for years, and this is the tool I use to safely strip electrical wires. This handy tool has multiple uses: The wire gauges are shown on the side of the tool so you know which slot to use for stripping insulation. The end of the tool can be used to grip and bend wire which is handy for attaching wire onto the screw terminals of switches and outlets.. The wire stripper will work on both solid and stranded wire. This tool is Very Handy and Easy to Use. |
