How to Wire a LED Conversion Bypass Light
I am installing a Ballast Bypass T8 LED Light, How should I change the light fixture wiring for a LED Bypass Conversion lamp?
LED Bypass Conversion Light Bulb
Electrical Question: How should I change the light fixture wiring for a LED Bypass Conversion lamp?
Lenny in Rhode Island asks:
- When installing ballast bypass t8 led lights to an old fluorescent fixture, is it necessary to pigtail 14 AWG wire from line voltage coming into the fixture to the tombstones rather than the old thinner (16 or 18 AWG) ballast wires?
- If you simply cut the ballast out and pigtail to the already tombstone connected ballast wires, won’t these thinner wires compromise the existing 15 amp circuit?
Thanks for your help!
Thanks for your electrical wiring question Lenny.

Wiring a T8 LED Conversion Ballast Bypass Light
- Lenny, from the information you have provided, and from what you have described, I understand your valid concern about circuit wire size. However in this case, as with most lower electrical consumption light fixtures, connecting the #14 AWG circuit wire to the existing wire of the light fixture tombstone lamp socket is allowed.
- Be sure to install the T8 LED Bypass Lamp with the designated label end into the converted power socket end of the light fixture where the wiring has been changed per the installation instructions.
