Wiring a Telephone Jack
Electrical Question: I replaced my phone jack and now I do not have a dial tone, how can I fix this?
- I am painting my basement and loosened a telephone jack to avoid painting over it.
- Somehow a wire got knocked loose in the jack and almost all my phone jacks are now dead.
- It appears that most of them are daisy-chained.
- There are two sets of four wires each coming out of the wall at that jack.
- The old jack wasn’t color coded and it was really ugly so I am attempting to replace it with a new phone jack.
- I twisted each pair of wires, the red wire to red, the green wire to green, and attached them to the corresponding screw on the new telephone jack. Now the phone isn’t working!
- I tried connecting just one set of wires to the new jack, then just the other set, but the phone still wouldn’t get a dial tone.
Please help!

My phone rings once and then ends call when connected to all indoor jacks. I hooked the phone into the outdoor jack and it works. One of my phone jacks has a loose white/orange wire. Don’t know where it goes but looks like it should connect in the row that has a yellow wire and another white/orange wire. Tried to stick it in the open slot but can’t get it all the way in.
Repair Phone Jack Wiring
Thanks for the tips! My phone jack wiring seems to keep having issues. Everything I’ve tired doesn’t seem to be working, so it seems like there’s something that I’m not doing. It seems like the answer should be in this article. It’s a good thing that you pointed out to make sure that different color wires shouldn’t be touching. I’ve been allowing to touch left, right, and sideways, so that answers a lot of questions. I’ll make sure to avoid letting them touch from now on to prevent the phone service from being interrupted.
