Checking for the Cause of Outlets Not Working
[ad#block]Electrical Question: In my living room I have 3 outlets not working.
- Other outlets and ceiling lite work and are all on same breaker, and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped and I checked 3 dead outlets and replaced with new ones also checked all connections in outlets. This is not new construction house is about 20 -25 years old.
- There was one outlet that looked like it heated on neutral side and there are no GFI’s on the circuit, but no melted outlets, and all were working and then just went out.
- There were no nails in the walls, nothing had been done to create a problem.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

How to Repair Wiring and Splices in Outlet Boxes
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced.
Tools Required: Basic Electricians Pouch Hand Tools and a Voltage Tester.
Estimated Time: Depends on personal level experience, ability to work with tools and install electrical circuit wiring.
Precaution: Identify the panel circuit, turn it OFF and Tag it with a Note before working with the wiring.
Notice: Burnt or damaged wiring and circuit components should be replaced with new electrical materials of the same voltage and amperage rating.
- Be sure to double check the wiring and any splices in the outlet box where you have seen the heated neutral.
- Burnt or discolored electrical wiring should be replaced as well as the wire connectors.
- Be sure to use the same gauge wire and wire connectors.
- Outlets that are discolored at the opening for the plugs should be changed and the wiring and splices should be inspected and repaired as needed.
