Electrical Question from Greg about Light Fixture Electrical Wiring
Background: Greg, a Homeowner from Ewa Beach Hawaii
[ad#block]Question: I want to install a ceiling light. I have a wall stitch, and the ceiling box has romex line (White/Black/Red and bare copper). All that is original home construction. I have a porcelain Lamp holder that has a brass color screw and a silver color screw. Can I use 18 ga. thermostat wire to connect from the Romex to the Lamp holder?
Thanks for your electrical question Greg. Absolutely Not! Thermostat wire is rated for low voltage wiring applications only. You may consider purchasing fork tongue connectors that are rated for the gauge wire that you have. These connectors will slide around the screw terminals nicely and can be crimped onto the same gauge stranded wire that is spliced to the solid Romex wire. By the way, the Brass Screw is for the Power wire, and the Silver Screw is for the Neutral wire.
